Sandbox 1.0.2 summary

Because of NDA, there will be a summary rather than a list of exact numbers so people can get more a gist of what’s happening on the server instead of overestimating numbers.

  • further artillery and stun balancing
  • support vehicles generally getting a buff in medium and long range combat because of underperforming
  • tanks with good armour getting a nerf for their guns to compensate their increased sturdiness

WoWs Q & A 29. 6. 2016

  • Q. Do you plan to do something regarding Japanese DDs and Tashkent ? Or have you decided they will remain as they are?
    A. They will remain as they are.
  • Q. I ran some tests regarding torpedo damage by launching torps with Smith on different ships. Several questions arose during these tests. The standard torpedo damage on Smith is 6033. When firing at the bow of New York, Aoba, Nagato, Amagi and Yamato, after 1 – 3 torpedoes, the damage was always the same, 2699, that is 45 % of the standard damage.
    Is it safe to assume that all the following torpedoes that will hit the “dead” section, their damage will be 45 % of the standard damage?
    A. No, your calculations aren’t exactly right. Torpedo damage is divided into alpha damage and splash damage. In port, the value is the sum of both these damage. If a torpedo hit the bow or stern of a ship, it inflicts full damage (1/2 from alpha damage to the bow/stern, 1/2 from alpha damage to the general section (where fire and flood damage is stored) + splash damage depending on the area the torpedo hit).
    When the bow/stern HP are depleted, torpedoes will do reduced damage (1/2 alpha damage to the bow/stern will not be inflicted anymore, damage to the general section and possible splash damage remain though). Therefore, we can broadly say that a destroyed section will take half damage from torpedoes. However, if the ship has received all the damage to one section, there is a chance that the general section HP will be depleted as well. In that case, the ship may not receive any damage at all. This is sometimes the case with destroyers receiving a tight spread of torpedoes to the same section which gets destroyed fast and thus enables the destroyer to survive several torpedoes.
  • Q. Another strange thing was that New York and Amagi needed only one torpedo to have their bow damaged whereas the other tier 7 – 10 BBs needed 2 – 3.
    What do bow HP depends on?
    A. The HP of each section depends on its volume compared to the entire ship. For example. Yamato‘s bow has bigger HP percentage than North Carolina‘s since it’s proportionally more voluminous.
  • Q. According to my tests, currently, only on Yamato it is worth taking torpedoes in the torpedo belt (damage on the belt : 2492). On all other ships, it’s not worth it (damage : 3136 to 4440).
    This happens as well in random battles. Every BB player moving to Yamato sails bow-on since the speed nerf to torpedoes make DDs useless against the class they are supposed to counter.
    Did you decide to abandon the Rock, paper, scissors philosophy ? What is developer’s thoughts about this situation and do they plan to make something about it?
    A. We are not abandoning the Rock, paper, scissors philosophy. In your observation, you forgot that torpedo belts reduce considerably the chance of flooding. If a BB has used his repair and receive a flooding, it could be terrible. Moreover, according to our statistics, currently, DDs aren’t having a bad time, including at high tiers. We currently don’t plan to change drastically torpedo, torpedo belts mechanics or the characteristics of these elements.
  • Q. How many flooding can a single section have ? Or is it not dependent on sections?
    A. There can be only one flooding on a given ship at a given moment. If a ship is already suffering from a flooding, successive flooding will not increase the damage or reset the duration.
  • Q. In the tech tree, on each ship info card, it is written how many ships of the same class were built. However, there seems to be some mistakes (what are the 5 Hipper-class ships?, or the 6 Iowa-class?). What is the criteria behind those numbers?
    A. As far as I recall, they represent the number of hulls laid down.
  • Q. Please explain why ships without camouflage are covered in rust ? Is it to encourage players to buy camouflages?
    A.  It wasn’t made to encourage players to buy camouflage. It simply was a decision made by the artists, the art director and the heads of the project. In the style of “this will please the majority of players”. If I remember correctly, there are some mods that remove the rust.
  • Q. Hoe does the new propulsion mod. upgrade work?
    A. The upgrade works as follows:

    • -50 % to the time for reaching maximum power. Only works when going forward.
    • Forced acceleration at speeds of -6 to 6 knots.

Patch 0.5.8 Public test info

  • The damage counter will include all damage inflicted (fires and flooding included).
  • Turret catapults (Wyoming, New York, etc.) are not ready yet, hence why they aren’t in this patch.
  • Regarding the armour model facelift, here is an example of how they improved it. (The new model follows the ship geometry more accurately). a3520ecf1e6d9b1ef93d864776e00ef2.png
  • Regarding the possible issue of xp farming on forts in bastion mode, they will gather statistics to balance credits and xp rewards. However, this process will take about one or two updates.
  • Here is a list of all the guns that will be able to rotate at 360° after the update (the number represents the turret number, starting from the bow).

  • Forts and ground objectives won’t be permanently destroyed. After having received certain damage, they will be temporarily disabled and will award victory points. They don’t want to explain all the rules of this new mode. They are more interested in the feedback it will receive from the PT, including how easy it is to understand without any previous knowledge.
  • Players won’t be able to opt out of the new game mode.
  • German BB’s are coming in one or two updates. They’re still in development.
  • No upgrade depot planned in the foreseeable future.
  • Ranked battles matchmaker will not be changed with this update. The new rules will only apply to random battles for now.
  • They may give players the option to choose between the new ribbon style or the old one. It will all depend on PT feedback.

Daily Q & A 27. 6. 2016

  • Q. “Version 9.15.1 didn’t bring much, no major changes, some updated content, minor improvements and fixes.”
    So why is it necessary? It will break mods again, I will have to wait until they are fixed again.
    A. Play without mods.
  • Q. Why was it necessary to change the minimap, I won’t change my standard map size because of this. Tank icons are giant, tank names overlap. In dense maps you usually can’t make anything out of the map in collision areas.
    A. Troubles with the interface are due to its translation into ActionScript 3. It will be fixed.
  • Q. Is there an approximate estimate of how many mods broke because of the transition to AS3 and how long it will take for them to get rewritten?
    A. All modes that change combat interface. I don’t know the time.
  • Q. You have T95E2 HD model on the test, but not in the list. Is the list wrong or is the model not in the release?
    A. I haven’t been doing patch notes for two patches already. I’ll ask about this.
  • Q. Who tested and and approved the current replacement of my Lorraine in “our game”? Everybody remembers when in the past we got both tanks and 100% of the crew on the new tanks after replacement. Then “free” from the “free to play” (F2P, right!) game disappeared. It changed to this: one removed, the other given. And now we have 9.15.1: tank with full crew removed and given a tank with an incomplete crew!
    A. Is the patch already out? The crew will change.
  • Q. It’s funny, but I can’t connect to the test, as it will not accept my account. I tried to log in with empty details and other accounts – everything useless. On the first server the login says “You are disconnected from the server,” on the second server it tries logging in, after a long connecting it says the issue is: “Not completed session on another server.”
    A. The test, unfortunately sometimes glitches like that. It will last until the server reboots.
  • Q. Batchat is an adequate substitute for Lorraine, but characteristics are still worse than tier 9 Skoda. Two details: 1. The fourth member of the crew. 2. A bad view range, make it at least 390 m.
    A. 1 – It will be fixed. 2. It is not current. We will need to ask the people who balance it.
  • Q. New minimaps are fail. Do them for all of the maps right away or don’t do them at all, what you did resembles some sort of alpha games on Steam early access.
    A. The idea was to check whether such minimap will be liked at all. If so, we’ll do it for the rest of the maps.
  • Q. New minimap is better, it’s a fact.
    A. I think so, too. But we decided to first check as a test.
  • Q. Did you change something on Object 140 model last patch? I seem to penetrate the area near the drive wheel much less now. As they say, it never happened and now it happens again.
    A. It seems it wasn’t touched. We need to check the model. To make sure.

Bastion Game Mode

To provide gameplay diversity during high-Tier battles, we have come up with a game mode called “Bastion”. Available only on the “Atlantic” map for now, this mode will have you assaulting or defending onshore installations, such as forts and strategic stations like radars or smaller fortifications. Neutralising or capturing these will net you Domination points, so it should be familiar to all who have tried “Domination” battles at higher Tiers.

Improved Matchmaker

The Matchmaker is the game component responsible for selecting the composition of both teams in the battle. With the overhauled system, we are now aiming to have the number of top-Tier ships in battle strictly balanced.

In version 0.5.8, we are launching a new and improved matchmaker for the Random Battles mode. The purpose of this change is to exclude situations when players could immediately guess the outcome of a battle by the composition of the teams, and to make confrontations more honest.

The features of the new matchmaker are as follows:

  • Situations when opposing teams appeared to have different number of players were completely excluded;
  • Aircraft carriers in opposing teams will continue to belong to the same tier;
  • In every battle, we have “battle tiers”, i.e. the maximum tier of a ship for a given battle. Ships of tiers corresponding to the tier of the battle are called “tops” or “top ships”. The following rules will apply to them:
  • Permissible difference in the number of divisions between the teams is limited and now equals 1;
  • Permissible difference in the number of destroyers between the teams is limited and now equals 1;
  • Permissible difference in the number of battleships between the teams is limited and now equals 1;
  • Permissible difference in the number of cruisers between the teams is limited and now equals 2;
  • For each type, the number of top ships will be strictly symmetrical. For example, if in a Tier VIII battle one team has two Tier VIII battleships, two Tier IX cruisers and one Tier VIII destroyer, the other team would also have two Tier VIII battleships, two Tier IX cruisers and one Tier VIII destroyer;

The above rule also applies to battleships belonging to a Tier that is one step lower than the Tier of the battle. For example, if in a Tier VIII battle one team has one Tier VII battleship, the other team would also have one Tier VII battleship.

We also recommend addressing some of the things that have to be tested to determine whether they’re necessary or not:

  • The new matchmaker logic does not provide for any ‘mixing’ of ships by nation, i.e. theoretically, there could be a situation where three Japanese destroyers will encounter three U.S. ones;
  • If it takes too long to assemble teams for a battle for whatever reason, battles may be fought between teams with incomplete lineup (11х11, 10х10 etc.);
  • Balancing the lowest Tier ships outside of their type is allowed. For example, a tier VIII battle could involve a Tier VI destroyer against a Tier VI battleship;
  • Balancing two same-type ships with enemy ships of adjacent Tiers is allowed if they are not in the top of the team and if they are not battleships. For example, in a Tier VIII battle, a Tier VI cruiser could find herself against a Tier VII cruiser on the opposing team;
  • Divisions may include ships of various tiers (low-tier ships are allowed to divisions with high-tier ships);
